The NZNBL 40th season tip off is just around the corner. Coach Joe has been busy of course behind the sense alongside the entire bulls organisation in preparation for their first ever home game on the 25th of April vs across town rival Auckland Huskies.

Coach Joe took some time this week to answer a few questions for us regarding the upcoming season.

Q: How have you found it transitioning from playing to coaching at this level?

I always wanted to eventually coach at this level. But had no idea it would all happen so soon. I took a lot of pride in representing my home town last year, in the Franklin Bulls’ first ever season.

Since I was a coach by trade outside of playing it hasn't been a huge adjustment. I'd say I've had to accelerate my own development to learn more technically/tactically but I've really enjoyed the process so far. The players have been great buying into everything... of course its been awesome working with Morgan & Jamie

Q: What is your role on the Bulls Coaching staff?

We all bring unique skill sets to our team. Our staff isn't a traditional model in the sense that the even though Jamie is the head coach, Morgan leads a lot of segments in trainings along side Jamie. I even take some sections here & there. My main role for the team is the player development side of things. I lead the morning vitamins sessions, also taking guys aside for individuals or even quick workouts pre practice.

Q: What games are you looking forward to this year?

Outside of final 4 nothing is going to top the very first game. It's been a long time coming the Bulls will be playing right here in Pukekohe! thats definitely going to be a special moment. Of course one away game I look forward to is when we play the Taranaki Airs @ Taranaki. Look forward to seeing a bunch of the Swoosh family there!

Q: How is the team looking heading into game one?

I know everyone is very excited, this has been a long time coming. The entire organisation have worked very hard to get us here. The players have put in a lot of hours both as individuals & as a team so it’a going to be awesome to see how it all comes together on the 25th.

We are all very excited for the season to start! We wish coach Joe & the entire team the best of luck for the season ahead! Be sure to check out the offical Bulls website for the schedule & ticketing information!

What a great start to our 2021!

Team Swoosh Players and Coaches have been busy so far this year as we continue to live up to our #developmentneverstops philosophy.

Take a look at some of the accomplishments and things we’ve done/doing so far:

  • Swoosh Cubs, our first steps development program for ages 5-11 years successful 8 week program this term with many new players from all around Taranaki. We also had 5 Swoosh Cubs compete in the Mel Young Easter Tournament.

  • Swoosh Scrimmage! A new addition to our Program running every week of the year. This has been great for our players to have a quality full court experience and put their skills to work in a 'game situation'.

  • Shot Development Sessions - We have added a new session specifically for shot development. This is a private small group shooting session tailor made for our players and their individual needs. Here we video and chart their shot development and improvement. It’s been great to see the benefit of this for players attending.

  • Collabs - Swoosh Training have been in collaboration with various clubs and associations contracting out Coaching and leadership services. Currently Coach Joe and Coach Sam have been woking with Franklin Basketball Association & Hawera Basketball Association helping deliver "In School Hoops" and other development programs.

  • Easter Tournament - Swoosh Coaches and players attended the Mel Young Easter Tournament over Easter. Coaches worked alongside TCB and FBA to take teams and players. It was a great chance to see where we are at in terms on development, skill and teamwork competing against some of New Zealand's best age group teams.

  • Partnership - Swoosh Training have a new partnership with Basketball Immersion. This is a very valuable partnership and relation we look forward to building on.

  • NZNBL - Coach Joe had the opportunity to Head Coach for the Franklin Bulls Pre Season official Scrimmage coaching Team White. Coach Joe is an Assistant Coach for the Enviro Bulls team this season. Their NZNBL 2021 Season Starts next weekend Sunday 25th May.

  • Internship - Coach Sam continues to work as part of her Internship with Basketball Immersion, Leading basketball teachers worldwide. This internship is a great opportunity for Sam and for our team as she learns, and adds value to both parties in involved.

  • 2021 Rep Season - Coach Joe and Sam will both be Coaching Rep teams this year. Coach Sam is working with Basketball Taranaki in the U17 and U13 age groups and Coach Joe is working for Franklin Basketball U15 & U17 age groups.

  • Swoosh Academy Programs - In addition to our Swoosh Cubs Program we have continued to operate all our Academy Programs. (Swoosh Junior Development Program, Swoosh Academy Program & Swoosh HP Program) as well as our small group and individual training sessions.

We are excited to continue with all of our Swoosh Academy Programs heading into Term 2. And look forward to developing with our players, coaches and support team.

Stay tuned for more info.
